Painting Melamine Furniture

Zinsser B-I-N feels quite thin when you apply it but it starts to thicken and really sticks very very quickly.

Painting melamine furniture. Between every coat of paint I would always lightly de-nib roughen the surface with 120 grip sandpaper wipe down with a damp cloth and thoroughly dry using some blue roll or paper towels. Then apply a coat of an acrylic latex paint with a brush or roller using short even strokes. Proper prep is key to painting a slick surface like melamine or laminate.

To paint laminate furniture start by sanding down the surface using 120-grit sandpaper so that the paint will stick better. If you are painting any furniture I would highly suggest using these for a smoother paint finish. To get started rough up the melamine with 150-grit sandpaper so the primer and paint sticks to it better.

Allow to dry thoroughly. You can apply a liquid deglosser to the melamine for 15 minutes instead if youre in a rush. Sanding the plastic-like surface of melamine allows the primer to adhere better.

To paint melamine youll need primer designed specifically for melamine or laminate wood as well as some melamine paint. Paint the melamine with an appropriate primer or primer undercoat. If it has doors you may want to remove the doors from its hinges to make it easier to paint. If you find it too thin at first pour some in a paint tray and leave it for 5 or 10 minutes for a thicker application.
