Can You Paint Over Waxed Furniture
A chalk paint production from Stratford-upon-Avon decorator Charlie Budd.
Can you paint over waxed furniture. You can paint 2 coats of AS on any clean slippy slidy surface then wax it with 2 or 3 sparing coats of AS soft wax then buff it up when dry. You can see a list of dark waxes below. Furniture Stripper and Paint Thinner If you seek only to remove the wax but want to use the previous paint color as a priming agent then use paint thinner to cut the wax and then rinse with water or more of your TSP solution.
According to what I could found about Annie Sloan brand wax it takes 24 hours to dry but another 4 to 6 weeks to fully harden and cure. Do you know what happens to an unwaxed piece of furniture that has a cold drink left on it. If you paint over wax that is wet even though wax isnt really wet or hasnt had time to cure the chance of the paint resisting or reacting to the wax is greater.
Unlike paint or clear finish wax -- even super-hard carnauba wax -- never completely cures. Painting over waxed wood generally isnt recommended. Rub it in until you are happy with the result.
The wax will initially resist it. If the wax feels dry- no matter if it is has only been 15 minutes since the last wax application or a day or two- GO ahead and paint right over it with Chalk Paint. Or- even that same hour.
At this point you could paint right over your wax and chalk paint and begin the process all over again without doing any further prep work on the piece. Wax and sealer stain finishes can be used on new or stripped wood. The reason for this is that wood is porous and allows the paint to soak into the surface of the wood.
Take an old soft rag and really rub it in. Minwax Dark wax. Good luck what an exciting project.
